Understanding Facet Pain

by Dr. Michael Silva

Facet pain, also known as facet joint syndrome, triggers localized spinal pain. The facet joints, located on either side of the vertebrae, can degenerate over time, leading to inflammation, restricted mobility, and chronic discomfort. Factors like aging, injuries, repetitive motions, and genetic predisposition contribute to the condition.Individuals with facet pain often experience persistent localized pain in the affected spinal area. Movements stressing the facet joints can worsen the pain, causing muscle stiffness and spasms. In some cases, the pressure on nearby nerves may cause pain to radiate, resulting in numbness or limb weakness.Dr. Michael Silva, as a Pain Management specialist, initiates treatment with conservative options like physical therapy, medications, and epidural steroid injections, which offer relief to many patients. If facet pain persists or recurs, Dr. Silva considers more advanced options, such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA).RFA is a minimally invasive procedure that targets pain signals transmitted by the affected facet joint nerves. Under fluoroscopic guidance, Dr. Silva inserts a small needle with an electrode near the targeted nerve. The radiofrequency energy emitted generates a lesion, disrupting pain signals and providing long-lasting pain relief.RFA boasts extended pain relief lasting from several months to years and requires less recovery time compared to traditional surgery, with fewer side effects. Dr. Silva will thoroughly discuss the benefits and possible risks with his patients beforehand. To learn more about facet pain, radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and other advanced pain management treatments, contact Dr. Michael Silva or one of our physicians at 305.974.5533 or visit www.SpineWellnessAmerica.com.

Stretches for Traveling

While seated, place your right hand on your left knee and your left hand on the backrest or armrest of your chair. Gently twist your torso to the left, using your hands as leverage. Hold the stretch for 15-20 seconds and then repeat on the other side. This will release tension in your lower back and improve spinal flexibility.

Stretching arms feels good and offers various benefits beyond preventing tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome. It reduces back pain, eases neck discomfort, and enhances posture, promoting overall well-being. Embrace this simple practice for a healthier and more comfortable body.

Hydration

Staying hydrated can help reduce pain by aiding in joint lubrication and preventing muscle cramps, promoting better overall mobility. Additionally, proper hydration supports the body’s natural healing processes, enhancing recovery from various types of pain.

BACK BRACE BENEFITS

Support, Stabilize, and Correct Your Mid and Lower SpineUsing a back brace offers a comprehensive range of benefits to support your back health. The brace provides essential stability and support, effectively preventing unnecessary pain and pressure caused by back instability or straining. It proves especially beneficial in alleviating backaches associated with various conditions, including arthritis, disc herniation, sciatica, spinal stenosis, and scoliosis.

For individuals recovering from surgical procedures, the back brace becomes a valuable aid in supporting and stabilizing the spine, facilitating a faster recovery process. Moreover, its ability to target compression and decompression in specific areas helps reduce inflammation and offers relief from discomfort. Whether you are lifting heavy objects, working out, or leading an active lifestyle, wearing a supportive back brace safeguards your lumbar spine from potential injuries. Designed with breathable materials and easy adjustability, the brace ensures comfort and flexibility during use. Additionally, incorporating the back brace into daily activities promotes improved posture and spine alignment, contributing to overall back health and well-being.

Consult your SWCA Pain Management physician to determine if a brace is a suitable option for you.
